...when we moved to our new family home with 11 acres of neglected fields. Little did we know it would lead us to Ellicar - our award-winning natural pool company.
The vibrant beauty of Ellicar Gardens today is in stark contrast to those neglected fields. The first two years were spent clearing brambles and fencing paddocks for our ever-growing menagerie. It was hard work but fun, and we loved the wild, open feel and big skies.
We were itching to start the garden but it was daunting knowing where to begin. Creating a naturalistic garden for our family, including our animals, who are a big part of our lives, was important to us. So, we watched the sun, the wind, learned about our rich black soil and observed how we used the space. In fact, it's how we approach client projects today – whether designing and constructing a natural pool or outside space.
Our pool, its borders and surrounding bog garden is planted with water lilies, reeds and marginals, making it a magnet for wildlife. And merging it seamlessly with the garden. Read More...
In spring, a succession of snowdrops, muscari, then white daffodils are followed by jewel-like tulips, then purple alliums and Siberian irises take centre stage. Weeping standard roses and shrub roses perfume the air in summer, jostling for space with giant Cardoons, colourful perennials and grasses. Read More...
A winding crab apple avenue leads from the orchard, underplanted with thousands of molinias, Siberian irises, geums, lythrum and other moisture-loving perennials. Known as 'Butterfly Walk', this walkway leads to a perennial meadow sown from seed. Narrow grass pathways winding through the meadow take you on an uplifting journey through thousands of jostling flowers, bumblebees and butterflies. Read More...
The first Elwesii snowdrops break bud on New Year's Day. Fragrant flowering shrubs like Sarcococca, Lonicera, Daphnes and Viburnums perfume the air, and a carpet of dusky Hellebores and tiny winter bulbs are waiting to be discovered. Wrapped around these winter treats is a colourful backdrop of Cornus stems, from darkest purple to flaming reds and yellows. Read More...
Pekin bantams, guinea fowl and giant Toulouse geese wander freely around the gardens. While our friendly Golden Guernsey goats wander through walkways from paddock to paddock. Two curious llamas often pop their heads over the fence behind our natural pool to check who's home! Read More...

Sat Nav brings you to our gate. For those coming from Misterton, ignore your sat nav and drive to the village of Gringley on the Hill, turn left onto Leys Lane, and follow the road out of the village for about 1.5 miles. We are situated on the left, the last obvious property opposite a cream house on the right. Look out for the swing signs at our gate.
If you're considering a natural pool or looking to create an outdoor space that's as beautiful as it is functional, we'd love to hear from you.
